Medicine - from idea to a real cure. What is a medicine and why are some of them a lot more expensive to "invent" than the others? How are different types of drugs produced and who are they tested on? And why is there still no single cure for all the diseases? Lauri Sikk, the expert of medicine development company Molcode.

Even though we might try, we can't deny the importance of mathematics. Mathematics as a system is elegant, thorough - and even beautiful. However, at a first glance, it seems to lack a tangible element. In this science theatre we take a closer look on what mathematics really is and how many different fields of science (but also our everyday lives!) it covers - in an unexpected and surprising way!

What's it like to work in a bomb dismantling squad - simultaneously in real and virtual world? Team work, stress resilience, virtual reality, FUN!

Test the strength and (communication) skills of your team (2-4 people). Can you talk yourself out of an explosive situation, or will you end up in small pieces spread on the bunker walls?

The adventures await from 26 to 29 September (starting at 17.00 and 19.30)

Earth's future has been riddled by disasters, famines, and droughts. There is only one way to ensure mankind's survival: Interstellar travel. A newly discovered wormhole in the far reaches of our solar system allows a team of astronauts to go where no man has gone before, a planet that may have the right environment to sustain human life.

What happens to food once you have eaten it? Where does it go? What will become of it?

In this science show, we take a look inside a human body. Join us through a series of fun experiments to learn some fascinating things about food chemistry and see how our digestive system works (and whether it’s really as disgusting as it might seem at a first glance). Why is it useful to have a glass of water at hand, when you’re eating a cookie? How do the 9-metre-long intestines fit into a 1,8-metre human body? And how can a pasta factory be a dangerous place?

Researchers' Night Festival special

Listen to scientists rhyme and debate. Fantastic ideas in forms of poetry and short presentations, on the subject of "What if...?". What if the Northern War would've turned out different? What if Newton's Laws didn't apply (or simply functioned in another way). What if Harry Potter was written by William Shakespeare? What if Germany had won World War 2? What if work made a monkey out of a man? The possibilities are endless!

The audience gets to pick their three favourites, who then "battle" each other in the second round. After that, the audience chooses the winner. We encourage people from different fields of science and life to join. Prizes for the best performers!

Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children.

Emajõe Barge Society invites you on the sunset and stargazing journeys!

19: romantic sunset journey
21: stargazing journey
23: stargazing journey

The romantic sunset journey takes you out of Tartu to catch the last rays of the setting sun and find out why the sunset is so colourful. Observe the nature preparing itself for the night and hear the stories about the barge and the river. The end of the trip takes you back into the brightly lit city!

The stargazing journey takes place in a quiet late night. Lie down on a sheepskin, take a look at the starry sky and listen to the "starman" Hillar Uudevald who speaks about the constellations and old legends. When the weather is not so fine, the stargazing takes part in a pop-up barge planetarium.

The journeys begin at the Sisevete Saatkond harbour
Tickets 10 €/person, 6 € for students. Tickets are on sale at Piletilevi sales points and website
