The
coziest cinema in the world ia back! On 20 September, AHHAA opens the
doors to the Pillow Cinema! It's completely free of charge and the movie
starts at 21.00 (doors open at 20.30).
We provide some seats for those who arrive early, but we recomment bringing your own pillow, or a chair (or even an inflatable or portable bed, if you wish!) There is also a popcorn and lemonade booth, so we have everything that's necessary for a perfect movie night (the price is 1 € for each).
The movie „Predestination“ (2014) tells a story of a time-cop and his final assignment, which does not turn out quite as planned. The movie is accompanied by a brief commentary from physicist Andi Hektor.
P.S. If you fall asleep during the movie (it *is* Pillow Cinema, after all), we promise not to wake you, unless you have requested it beforehand.

Language technology is the field of science that consists of natural language processing and covers such disciplines as computer sciences, statistics and linguistics. One of its sub-fields is machine translation that has become increasingly popular during the past decade - even though such translations are still far from perfect. Mark Fišel, Associate Professor in Natural Language Processing at the University of Tartu, explains how machine translation works, how we're able to create translation programs without any knowledge of the source or target language, why translation programs make errors and why, despite the errors, they're still extremely useful to both casual Internet users and professional enterprises.

Electricity, in one form or another, underlies just about everything around us. It’s in the lighting from the sky, it’s the spark beneath our feet when we walk on a rug, and it’s what holds atoms together to form molecules. We see electricity at work in technological devices of many kinds, from lamps to computers. Join Chris Chiaverina to learn about these phenomena through a series of sometimes “shocking” activities that are sure to get you “charged up” about electricity!

Have you ever wonder how a science show is prepared? Well you are about to find out! Together with the audience we will go through main parts of a science show. Together we will decide how to start and how to end the show. How to encourage the audience to participate in the show and how to work with a volunteer. We will choose narration and story to be told. At the end, we will gather all the ideas and improvise a science show. Be not only an audience member, be a co-writer of the scenario!

Science lurks from everywhere! Even in our home! In this presentation, you will see colour changes strange behaving liquids, bubbling mixtures and much more. And most importantly – you can do the experiments on your own at home! Oh, and for the final we have little surprise – “home”-made ice cream with liquid nitrogen.

AHHAA's beloved science cafe series gets a brand new addition - a science cafe specially for kids! All primary/elementary schoolers (but also their parents and older siblings) are most welcome! And, like in our other science cafes, we offer some healthy snacks alongside the discussion :)
How to keep your teeth clean and healthy? Sanna Vako (from Suukool, a project dedicated to the health of children's teeth) talks about the dental hygiene and four golden rules that help to prevent cavities. She also explains what causes cavities in the first place, what people used to believe earlier and what does the current research show. How has dental medicine technology developed and how do both doctors and patients benefit from it? What is a kofferdam? What use is a good microscope? Come and find out!

Why do we need to protect some plants by law - and who's threatening them in the first place? OK, it seems reasonable to protect the majestic orchids, but what if it's some random-looking grass...? Can we justify the "plant deportation" if they get on the way of, say, real estate development? When a rare plant grows in a botanical garden, is it merely a nice addition to the garden's collections, or an absolutely necessary method of conservation?
One of the main purposes of botanical gardens is to protect and conserve the Earth's rich flora. In Estonia, there are 215 protected species of vascular plants and 46 species of bryophytes. About a hundred of these species are represented in the Uni. Tartu Botanical Gardens. Rare species are protected by the law, but the protection of whole biodiversity requires the ethical treatment of all living organisms.
On the Researchers' Night we open a new exhibition "Protected Species" that introduces the protected Estonian plants in our renewing collections. You are also welcome to join the thematic tours (outside at 17.30 and 18.30, in the greenhouse at 19.30) and take part in a quiz.

Intriguing science topics, Estonian top researchers and cozy cafe atmosphere - what more do you need for a great discussion? Some coffee and snacks, maybe, but we've got that covered as well. So join us in this year's Science Cafe series!
The guest of this year's last science cafe is Anne Kull., professor of systematic theology (Uni. Tartu) who discusses the idea of artificial intelligence and future through the scope of ethics. How does our perception of future shape the artificial world? As a system, future is natural, it doesn't "belong" to anybody, although it's constantly driven by the "artificial" decisions of people and institutions. Biotechnology, AI, climate change etc. feed both our fears and our hopes. The future looks too open and too closed at the same time.
Each technology that affects us can be considered an improvement of AI. The concept of future is hard to grasp and similar to a living organism - not a static state, but a continuous process.

On this year's Researchers' Night we talk about morality, ethics and future - from the perspective of ghosts and various creatures of fear. What kind of ethical norms apply to a house ghost? Why do aliens value the protection of personal data? Can harbingers predict their own future? At the end of the event, the Purple Lady, our museum ghost shows us the cellars and other intriguing nooks and crannies of the museum.

At Uni. Tartu Museum, this year's Researchers' Night is significant in many ways: 25 years ago, Estonian got its own currency, kroon; 225 years ago, Karl Ernst von Baer was born - the scientist who discovered egg cell and who was later depicted on a 2-kroon bank note. Thus, we invite you to an intriguing lecture on surrogate motherhood. The lecture takes place on 29 September at 18 and is hosted by bioethicist Kadri Simm.
19.00, 20.00, 21.00, 22.00 “Live and lifeless science!” The Mad Scientist conducts his experiments and discusses whether it's ethical to experiment with food? For example, if we use eggs, should we take into account that they consist future life and are also a source of nutrition?
18.00 - 23.00 Workshop “What is DNA?”. And why do we need it? Try to extract DNA from a fruit!
18.00 - 23.00 Workshop“ "Mission: eggs without cracks!". Build a parachute for the egg and try to land it safely!
During the workshops, we discuss who and why are ethical "test subjects" and which lines shouldn't be crossed.

Ray Bradbury's classic novel "Fahrenheit 451*" talks about book burning. Bradbury didn't even have to come up with the concept himself, as books have been burnt multiple times throughout the history. But who decides if a book should be preserved or not? Politicians? Censors? Readers? If a book is meant to perish, what is the proper way for getting rid of it? Are there more and less ethical methods? We're living in the golden age of the Internet and yet, we are publishing more books than ever. How come? Discuss with the experts!
